Design Meets Ag

As Design Manager at the Brock Center for Agricultural Communication, I was in charge of designing this newsletter for the Farm Bureau for which our center was commissioned. It went out to 850+ paying members. I loved working on this project for FB because it gave me the opportunity to combine my training as a designer with my passion for agriculture. I hope to make a career out of bringing greater awareness to the ag industry through good design.

Flexible history.

Before my team was brought on to create the SLO County Farm Bureau’s newsletter, we looked through their past magazines. The design of articles, covers, and photo layouts were unique in every issue. The newsletter was also in some need of modernizing, as it lacked white space and a cohesive aesthetic.

Establishing
a brand.

I chose to achieve this cohesion before we began design. I created a standards manual for the Farm Bureau so that they could establish rules for all subsequent issues of the newsletter. This manual included a color palette, set typefaces for both body text and headers, as well as guidelines for proper logo and graphic element uses. The palette was chosen to to represent the scenic, warm hues of the golden hilled setting of the Central Coast. The serif and sans serif combination was chosen to give the Farm Bureau magazine an updated feel.
